The Battle Against Mosquitoes: A Personal Journey with Biogents Mosquitaire
Mosquitoes are the bane of my existence. As someone who suffers from severe reactions to mosquito bites, I've tried everything from DEET-laden sprays to lemon-clove repellents. But nothing has truly worked. So, when I heard about Biogents Mosquitaire, a non-toxic mosquito trap, I was intrigued. Could this be the solution to my mosquito woes? Let's dive in.
The Mercedes of Mosquito Control
Biogents Mosquitaire is like the Mercedes of mosquito control. It's not cheap, with a single trap costing $200, but it promises to be effective. The company claims it can trap and kill existing mosquitoes and prevent reproduction. I was skeptical, but desperate for a solution, so I decided to give it a try.
The Setup
I received two Mosquitaire traps and two GAT devices. The Mosquitaire is a hexagonal plastic device the size of a small plant pot, while the GAT is smaller, resembling a flower pot. I placed the Mosquitaires in shaded, still corners of my garden and installed SweetScent attractant pouches in each. The GATs were set up at the side of my house in similar locations.
The Results
After two weeks, I was impressed. One Mosquitaire trap caught over 200 common floodwater mosquitoes and about 15 Asian tiger mosquitoes. The other trap caught much less, but still, it was effective. The GAT traps, however, were less impressive, catching only a few Asian tiger mosquitoes and other insects.
Expert Insights
I reached out to experts for their insights. Jim McHale, president of JP McHale Pest Management, identified my catch as different species of midges, crane flies, and beetles, not urban pests. Bart Knols, a biologist known as the 'ultimate mosquito killer', confirmed that the traps were working and catching a good number of mosquitoes. However, he noted that the GAT traps were less effective due to competition from alternative breeding sites.
The Verdict
Are Biogents traps worth the investment? In my opinion, yes. They caught enough mosquitoes to produce a significant drop in bites when they were running. However, they are only part of the solution. I will continue to use them, but I also need to find and remove the breeding sites.
